Garden of the Groves is dedicated to the memory of Freeport’s founders, Wallace and Georgette Groves. It’s acknowledged as one of the finest botanical centers in the Caribbean, a floral and water paradise of hibiscus, bougainvillea, powderpuff, chenille, screw pines and Washington palms. A walk through the garden will take you through tiny floral communities, including the Citrus Grove, Fern Gully and Bougainvillea Walk. Along the way, keep an eye out for curly tailed lizards and wander beneath ornamental waterfalls.
Take a rest in the tiny Chapel on the Hill, visit the Cactus Garden and the Hanging Gardens, and pause to look at a replica of Freeport’s first airport terminal building, a tiny wooden hut with barely enough room for two people. The walk through Fern Gully will take you 20 feet below the surrounding gardens to a 400-foot pathway lined with exotic plants and flowers, heady with the sweet smells of the island’s year-long summer. Guided tours available. Petting zoo. Wedding ceremonies offered.
